I have the same experience with Dreamhost and if it wasn’t for my boss having a jillionty websites on it, I’d move it in a heartbeat.

Nothing but crashes, ridiculous downtime, laggy servers, etc. Keep in mind that all of these sites have been test sites (and just website mockups, no crazy genome breaking voodoo) with little or no traffic.

I recently found this site: https://www.nearlyfreespeech.net/ They seem like the ideal revenue model. At first I wasn’t convinced by after reading their FAQ, it became clear, and I swear I don’t work for em .

One sad part is no e-mail. But that’s what Gmail is for!

I was in the same bloated boat. I was using BlueHost – and I was starting to develop with Plone. (Can’t run Plone on a shared hosting service)
I switched to Slicehost and have been loving it.
Not to mention that it’s fun to run your own server and learn about server management.

All of the ‘shared’ hosting providers like Dreamhost have the same business model. There is a market for that kind of service, but when you are ready to step up to the next level, a virtual server is the right way to go.
