Jailbreaking my iPhone 1.1.1

Today, I decided to Jailbreak my iPhone. It just seems to be the thing to do. Too bad I missed out on the Jailbreaking table at TechCrunch. Oh well, I like to play dangerously.
So I downloaded the iFuntastic v3 at first, but then I find there’s a v4 out there too!
I hit a few small speedbumps along the way. I have iTunes 7.5 and my iPhone is version 1.1.1. I have tried hard not to update to 1.1.2, because I know that it’s going to be a bit harder to jailbreak (although apparently, much work has been done on that and it’s possible).
When I went to restore my iPhone, it seems that since I never had to download 1.1.1 firmware, then it wasn’t on my system and it was insisting that I download 1.1.2. No good. If you Option-Click on the “Restore” button you can choose which firmware image you want to use. I found an image of 1.1.1 after much searching.
iTunes backs up all your contacts information and such, so there’s not much to lose in restoring the phone. I did realize that I need to hook up my external drives to restore all of the music. Oh well. Back to Jailbreaking.
After trying to jailbreak it with iFuntastic v4 (which didn’t work) and v3, which didn’t work… I gave up for today. I think something went wrong around the soft-restore part.
Then I was just trying to restore the phone again. That didn’t work. I kept getting -1604 errors and finally a -50 error. I kept trying to restore 1.1.1. No go. So I resorted to installing 1.1.2. Makes it a pita to jailbreak later, but I’ll get around to it. At least it worked. From the posts I was reading online it was starting to sound like I was going to have to make a trip to the Apple store and act like I wasn’t trying Jailbreak my phone.
Nate said that he had success with Jailbreakme.com. I’ll try that later.
